Endowed funds differ from gifts, grants, or appropriations in that the total amount of the gift is
invested. The library’s endowment—which received its first contribution in 1891—is a fund of
money or assets (like stocks and bonds) donated over time to support the library’s mission and
operations in perpetuity. A portion of the income is used annually to support the library while
